What to bring there or not to bring?
I believe that you've already checked wheather condition in Malaysia, but anyway we want to make you sure that, except some special places, you won't need warm clothes at all. For these occasional situation when you will need jacket or sweater, there is no problem to buy it in every shoping mall in KL. Generaly there are only few places with colder or better to say less hot temperature, such as Cameron Highlands, Genting Higlands, Bukit Fraser or Mount Kinabalu area on Borneo Island.
What else to bring?
Well, it's really depends on everybody's needs, but everything you would need is easy to find in one of the shoping malls all around Kuala Lumpur as Malaysians love shopping! Prices around KL are in comparison with central Europe very reasonable. Actually, only one thing you would need to bring there is huge empty luggage for the getting back home times, since you will need to bring home all of this beautiful things.
Apartments in KL
One of the biggest challenge is to find convenient apartment quickly, safely and cheaply (in case apartment is not provided by your employee) How did we do it? Well, althought all my colleagues and friends were extremly helpfull it is almost impossible to find nice place within one week which I had. Firslty I was calling friends of my friends if they know about something private, but unfortunatelly was not successful. Therefore, I've decided to find place by using Internet sources as follows:
As you can see on these links they mostly offer either so called Condominiums or Service apartments. In both types of habitations were facilities such as security, parking slots, swimming pool, gym, TV room or some sport facility. Only different between condo and service apartment is that service appartment is cleaned on some regular basis, provides better services and of course is more expensive.
Anyway, it was very difficult to find apartment for half a year contract and at last, after tens unsuccessful telephone calls I was forced to find other way to success. Hence, I've one day went to city by myslef, just walked around and looking for some nice condos. And finally I have found one which I fallen in love called "Casa Mutiara" on lovely place close to Bukit Bintang, just next door to police headquarters.
They offered me tiny studio with kitchen, bathroom and washing machine for 1,600 RM per month. After I paied almost 3000 RM deposit I could settled and was it. I have found it, paied it and settled in in no more than one day.
Shopping in KL
As I've already mentioned, Malaysians love shopping and they are crazy about all of these huge shopping malls. The ones we have found good and interesting for us, were:
Best to buy daily needs (Supermarkets):
What to do in Kuala Lumpur?
KL is big cosmopolitan city where everyone can find something interesting for himself. What we have found amazing was of course food which is everywhere. You can choose from Malaysian, Nonya, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Indian or Punjabi as well as western cuisine for very reasonable prices. Best place to eat outside is street Alor (Jalan Alor) wich every day at sunset becomes very well food stalls populated and crowdy. If you prefere confort and clennes then you should not miss food courtes in Pavilion, Suria KLCC or Sunway Lagoon. Apart of filling your stomach with extremly delicious food, you can also of course do sightseing and visit places as Merdeka Square, Petronas Towers view bridge, Menara KL, museums or parks. What is also worth to see is KL ZOO or Batu caves. In spare time you can of course visit cinema, theatre, concert, opera and bets spot to enjoy nightlife is Sunway or KLCC area.
What to do around?
If you have your own car travelling becomes very easy and effective as Malaysian love cars and their roads are on very high level. Very nice to visit and spend some time is for example Cameroon Highlands, Malacca town, Penang island, Tioman island and of course Borneo island national parks and cities such as Kuching, Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan and many many more.
Malaysia is as well very good lacated between Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia so if you have plenty of time and enough money you can flight there by very good serviced low cost airlines airasia.com.
Telecomunications
Most probably you will need to buy cell phone with some malaysian GSM operator. You can choose from three of them:
- our choice with best coverage and good mobile Internet services Maxis
- Digi
- Celcom
From other home entertaiments you could be interested in hundreds TV channels from all around the World provided by Astro or broadband Internet from TM (streamyx) .
Newspapers
Some of the english writen newspapers:
Public transport
Transporatation within city is bit tricky as train lines as well as bus routes and stations are not integrated except very few hubs like KL Sentral, Hang Tuah or KLCC. To get outside of city for example to CyberJaya you will definitely need to use fast and convenient KLIA transit train, which begin its journey at KL Sentral and is bound to KL Internationl Airport. Unfortunally using Rapid KL buses is not that convenient and you will need a lot of patient. Otherwise we suggest taxi, but be carefull they always trying to cheat you.
Safeness
Since KL is just a big city, safeness is relative. Anyway it is not that bad, but you should be watching your backpacks and handbags because of crazy motorbike gangs are stealing them on daily basis. It is better to leave them to steal it than trying to defend your belloonings to avoid any injury. We have heart about some killed people during their attacks.
